About the Games

The South Island Masters Games is an annual festival of sport which is held each year alternating between Christchurch and Timaru.

Running for a week it is a chance for veteran athletes at all levels and abilities to compete in more than 30 different sporting codes.

Most sports have both competitive and social grades so you don't have to be a top performer or even a current competitor to enter. There are no qualification criteria -.  athletes don’t need to be nominated or to represent a club – they represent themselves.

Athletes can be an absolute beginner lining up against an ex-All Black or a novice against a world record holder!  Anyone can enter – as long as they are old enough.  Most sports take entries from age 30 or 35 and upwards.  All people with disabilities are encouraged to enter events at the games where applicable and event organiser will endeavour to cater to your needs.

And just because the emphasis is on participation, doesn’t mean it‘s a social event. (Although the social programme at the SIMG is ledgendary!)

The Games attract serious masters athletes including national and international representatives striving to achieve personal bests and to break New Zealand and World Records.  The last time the games were held, 3 masters age group world records were broken!

Previous Games have been huge successes providing multi-million dollars of ongoing economic and community benefits for the city with wide support from locals and bringing in visitors from all over the South Island, with a handful of North Islanders and overseas competitors.

If you are entering by paper entry form remember to add you sports fee into your total to pay..
